old days - new thinking

brings back memory wherever you are, and wherever you're from....

but if you are from some place where lives are like the singaporeans' lives in the 40's, then you may not appreciate the reason the these things bring back lots of happiness to the people in their 50's and above...

thots are always rooted back to a point when you begin to think.....

standard - my ass

Here is a picture
evolution works the same way - the main theme that runs throughout evolution is THE FITTEST SURVIVES(like the asses of the horses in the story below)! so whatever human is capable of doing is the result of his fight for survival - like man likes fat-ass ladies, for their productivity, like gal likes strong men, for their healthy genes... sexual pleasure used to be a means to lure the couple to copulate for procreation, but now it's become an end in itself.

human has made an ass of himself - by just going after the ASS!

Traceability of standard

"Railroad tracks.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates designed the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.

Why did 'they' use that gauge then?

Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?

Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads?

Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels.

Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore, the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. In other words, bureaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process, and wonder, 'What horse's ass came up with this?' , you may be exactly right.

Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.)

Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, you will notice that there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah.

The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit larger, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important?

So, Horse's Asses control almost everything...

Explains a whole lot of things, doesn't it?

the question, what could have been there, before gobekli tepe?

why built it?

who had the authority to command the people to build it?

shibo, the koi expert from bangladesh, has been working in the koi farms of singapore for more than 10 years. he's now living here with his wife, no child yet.

koi's are his children. he knows all the in's and out's of any koi.

he asked, "how much you pay to clean the pond?"

"120."

"ok.... just let that guy do it. i actually charge more."

"how much?"

"200."

"why so much?"

"i come with a helper and do a thorough job, sucking up all dirts in the pond. look at your fish well-being, and advise you on what to do if your fish is sick....."

- foreign talent in another field.

good food - multi-lovers

the best vietnamese spring rolls is here.

but for tonite's dinner, the main course is pork knuckle, for the occasion of oktober fest. but instead of beer, they order a bottle of red wine.

stephen joined them half way, when he was waiting for his to-go.

but vietnamese spring rolls they also order.

it's not the fried type, it's rolled with fresh rice skin, filled with herbs and shrimps, and the bite is springy and the taste is herby.... dipped in sugary chilly source, it's just superb.

he doesn't remember he tried anything like that in any of vietnamese restaurants he had patronised.

when the food is good - it's like making out with a new lover every time you sink your teeth in it!

changes - wary?

changes will come. face them.

he told him, "jerry told me there will be changes next year."

he said, "well, not surprising."

he said, "are you wary?"

he said, "how? there's being changes ever since, especially after the new guy stepped on board. anyway, we need to adapt."

mako - a lawyer

he said, "it's the duty of the sale committee has to do its due diligence and sell the property to maximise the value of the property and to sell it at the proppep.... time, what's the word used in the law, mako?"

mako, "appropriate?"

"no.... something like propoe...."

"PROPITIOUS!"

"yap. sell it at propitious time. when is the right time to sell, i don't know. nobody knows, you have to look at all the circumstances and come up with the decision whether this the right time to sell... or conversely, any event that may present itself not the correct time to sell." the lawyer continued while mako resumed taking down notes of the conversation.

mako, a bespectacled, 30-year old boyish looking young man, is fresh from law school. he has been attending meetings and signing sessions of the enbloc deal for quite sometime now. he also replied thru emails of questions put to the law firm by the property agent and the sale committee.

he looks serious always and a bit tired tonite. also you can sense he's a focus person, a sort of walking dictionary type, a rainman kind of disposition.

after the meeting at 10pm, he with his loaded back-pack rushed out of the building to catch the bus for home.

boy, he sure looked tired, and mechanical!

change - fear

There's the inert urge for change, but there's also an equally fear factor for it.

when you are the change initiator, you want it for the better. when you are the change target, you fear for the unknown - when you do not belong to the inner circle of the change initiator.

the most important thing of any organization is boss-subordinate rapport. so when change happens, the subordinates do not suspect the motive of the change. many times, office politics get the upper hand when changes are introduced. instead of making changes for the sake of the company's betterment, they are made for the sake of the individual's political capital to raise/firm-up his position.

lone wolf - ?

wolf - who wants to be the lone wolf?

he's out of his pack - searching for his prey, his sleeping partner and had nothing but the long nite.

the lone wolf has all its freedom, loneliness and irrelevance.

it's that irrelevance that makes the lone wolf so nonconforming.

the wolf is lives for its own life.

general's wife - the general

"oh, look! there's general's wife. the general has the midef limousine, and driver to drive him around, while his wife has to drive herself in a suzuki swift."

"but she's driving the general motors at nite!"

agm - again

agm again - but this time he learnt from the last when by the time was out of the meeting when it ended at 1am, there's nothing much left in the buffet supper served on the basement floor. this time he and his fren got down to the basement just after 10pm, and lo and behold, there were people already started eating the potting hot teochew porridge.

he came to the meeting late, so he could not cast his vote.

although there's lots of heat on the office bearers of the club, and this time two were thrown out by vote of no confidence, and some were insinuated of corruption, people still came forward to render services to the club in the various position. there was still much contest for all the positions except only one candidate for the club treasurer.

the chairman of the club chaired the EGM(normally the president does so), before the AGM started, to discuss the no-confidence votes fir the incumbant presidents, treasure, the tender comm chairman and another GC member..... and he did a good job in controlling the order of the meeting. attendance was a new record of over 1200.

the management did a lousy job in the preparation for voting of the resolutions. they missed out voting ballet papers for two of the 7 reso. if anyone need to be sacked, the angmoh gm should get his butt kick in the first place.

koi - the graceful eater

koi, the fish that opens its mouth big when it eats!

they bot 11 - mostly small ones, with a couple of medium ones.

zhou lingfei - the aura continues?

death - web properties

he has the idea about this for sometime now.

what happens to one's web contents when one passes away? is there any web will that one can make? how to trigger the will?

you can set up a webpage(webwill). the registered will-maker have to
1. put down his real name, and other particulars
2. put down the person he want to be his "beneficiary"
3. put down other people he wants them to know, what he has done in the net
4. put down all the websites, user id's, nikcs, passwords.
5. put down the instruction he wants his beneficiary to do with the websites/contents
6. put down his "frens" that he wants to inform of his demise
7. write his own obituary

question : do you trust this website to give them your userid's, nicks and passwords?
ans: since you already trusted websites that have your emails, etc, so why not one more website?

will trigger:
1. the webwiller has to check in this website at least once in certain period(determined by webwiller)
2. if he did not check in within that period, webwill will send out an email to his designated email account to ping his presence. if within one week, no reply, send another one, send one more if no reply. by by the third email. no reply, will release his personal web property info to the beneficiary and inform all the rest of his frens of his demise.
3. also put an obituary on the webwill page.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - When you die, does your Facebook account die with you? Or that online photo album? What about your iTunes playlist, blogs or tweets?

Laws in the United States and elsewhere are vague on the fate of digital rights to online accounts after death, leading to complications and legal wrangling for survivors who want access to the online services of the deceased.

Legal experts say it's unclear who owns what in the Internet 'cloud', and that in some cases the user agreement for email or social networking sites terminates when a person dies.

In the case of online photo albums, 'those photos are yours and you have a copyright, but the problem is if you upload them to a site like Shutterfly, the property you own is now stuck behind a licence', said Nathan Dosch, a Wisconsin attorney specialising in estate planning.

mid autumn - hazy moon

mooncake festival market in albert street, at the eve of the mooncake festival saw quite a big crowd. he bot 2 pomelos for $5. took some pictures. they had durian mooncakes and pomelos at the eve of mooncake festival.

tonite, the mooncake festival arrived, the moon was kind of shy, she has been hiding in the hazy clouds before 10pm; there's fires in sumatra, and the winds carried the haze to this little red dot - psi 62, burning smell in the air.

no lantern, no fire sparkles this year.

little india - acting big

sunday, when the people come out in hoards, and when the atmosphere is aromatic, when there's a sense of antiquity and familiarity of home.... all the more he wants to come here to be part of it all.

abu takes his off day and meets up with his frens in little india.

he wants to ask his fren to help him to get a gal fren.

his fren, loman says, "my fren, you came here not long. better take care of your work first. then think of women."

but he says, "my fren, i know. but you don't know, i'm a man of real needs, i need a woman before i can work good. i beg you to help me."

"my fren, i see what i can do..... see, there's a gal across the street, go and approach her."

"how?"

"my fren, go tell her that you are new here, and you need a gal fren."

"so simple? will it work?"

"my fren, simplicity always trumps acting big! try it and you will see how simple the world is!"

sungei road - much business about old-stuff

pictures taken with pentax k-x, chinon 50mm, m42 mount, stopped down to f8-22 to get the depth of field due to m42-k adaptor limited in focal range(cannot focus to finity) and also with very quick-dirty focusing, in crowded street.

talk about business - the sungei road old-stuff market is seeing people-mountain-people-sea..... maybe part of it is because they shut down most of the area for development, only pitt road and a couple of its branching lanes are opened for business.

"three dollar, three dollar.... " the lady shouted to push the sale of the old jeans. she has been there for many years.... so have those shoutings.

thru the years, he bot a few old stuff from there, an old number cruncher, some weights, some dvd's.... and he has been looking for a first-generation mobile phone, those biggies.... he found a couple of really-run-downed ones, not the one he likes.

today he was out for the biggy again. he met a middle-age couple who were also looking for the biggy. The man said, " this is my gal fren, we have been looking for the taikotai for sometime now. If you get one, let us know, we would like to pay high price to buy from you."

"Why you want the phone so badly?"

"You see, a few months ago, before i knew my gal fren, I was still very single, so was my gal fren. my weekend pastime was coming to sungei road, looking for old stuff, and so was my gal fren's. i came to sungei road, one weekend. i was looking at the taikotai in one stall. the seller wanted $100, i haggled a bit. he wasn't willing to sell. the gal beside me, who was eyeing on the same phone, gave the seller $100 and got the phone. i was quite pissed off. but what could i do, the higher bidder gets the deal. i asked her why she undercut me in the deal. she said, if she didn't do it, she would live to regret for it - like what she had experienced in her love life.... the topic turned to love life.... and we clicked and i befriended her, she's my gal fren now! we felt the taikotai we have must be lonely, so we are looking for another one to keep it in company."

so sungei road is not only the market for old goods - it's also a market for older singles to get hitched.

for some, sungei road is a road to the future built on the past!
