jurong park - the old man and the lake

mr wu is from wuhan, has been here for the last 4 years, looking after his son's kid.

his son is working in the semicon fab house. and his daughter in-law used to work in the same place as his son, but now has moved back to china to work, coming back to singapore quite often, like during official company meetings, holidays....

today, his daughter-inlaw is in town. so he took his day off. he lives near-by, and he cycled here to pass off his day with the lake.

living in singapore is ok for him, though it's a bit humid for him. he can find everything he's familiar in his home town in singapore, the food, the daily stuff, the liquor, his favorite brand of tea..... but he's quite a lonely man, if not spending time with his grandson.

so he bot a bicycle and found the lake in jurong park two years ago, and he bot some fishing gears and began to have his off-days tucked away in a quiet corner of the lake.

today he got a big fish that he's going to bring up home to cook for his family.

he said, "my son is a manager, my daughter-inlaw also a manager. but they live apart, so i help to take care of the kid. when i have my off time, i like to come to this lake fishing. i like fishing because other than taking care of my grandson, nothing much to do here. i don't gamble, so no use for IR, i don't flirt, so no use for geylang, and i don't like to talk, no use to go kopitiam.... fishing is different, just like my son, my daughter-inlaw, they go separate ways because of better salaries, which are just like baits on the hook - once the fish is hooked, the fate is not easily changed."

"and i would rather be the one who's holding the rod."
