temple - wayang

every year, around this time, the temple would have 'wayang' at the front compound. so far, all these years, they have been engaging the hokkien troupe. this is to celebrate the birth of its patron deity.

nowadays, the shows for seventh month ghost festival are normally 'getai' shows - modern singing gigs. the 'wayang' troupes have their heydays 20 years ago, and now you could hardly find them in any corner of singapore.

he remembered those childhood years, when there was 'wayang'(most times, teochew, sometimes hokkien, sometimes cantonese opera) in the seventh month, all the seats were taken and some people watched standing. kids like him, joined in the fun, though he could hardly understand what the story was about let alone, what the actors were saying on the stage. it was just festive season, merry time and yummy time. there's a lot of hawkers around the area to cater for all sorts of tit-bits, rojak, cotton candy, noodles, char-koay-tiaw, ice-balls, ice creams.....

those were the years when children grew up playing hide-n-seek instead of virtual wars in the computers.....
