if mm is smarter than himself he would have loosen the noose on the opposition, 10 years ago, and let the people make their choices. not going hard after whoever that's viewed as formidable to the authority of incumbent. instead he's shouting loud to the young generation, telling them don't take things for granted and lean to the opposition after he's gone.
when he's gone, nobody will listen to what he says when he's alive, particularly not the young ones.
so 10 years ago if he opened up the political scene, now we may have a dozen or so opposition in the pariahmen, and people then can see what they can do..... more importantly, the gahmen, particularly, the mm could see what's the situation will be.... if the opposition is wreaking havoc, destabilizing the system, the gahmen, with mm at the helm would still be able to pull the break, and 'right' the situation according to his will.
now, it's too late. when he's gone, and if things develops as what he predicted(pessimistically that singapore will go downhill after he's gone, probably ends up in the opposition's hands), then he would not have the chance to do something about it; definitely not be able to do what he said, jumping up from 6 ft underground to fix things he sees as wrong.
pity, a great man like mm(as many sees him as such), does not have the wisdom of breaking out of his own idiosyncrasy of being trapped by situational events, short-term interests to see further than his own blind-sighted vision.
